چکیده

Linear alkylbenzenesulphonate (LAS) (Fig. 1) is, apart from soap, the dominant surfactant in detergents worldwide (about 2·5× 10 t year, Schulze 1996). Commercial LAS is a mixture of linear alkanes (C10 to C13) each subterminally substituted with a single (4-sulfophenyl) moiety, and this mixture is the synthetic chemical product whose biodegradation has been examined to the greatest extent by regulatory agencies from data supplied to them (Schöberl 1993). Nevertheless, the use of LAS has been criticized on the basis of its non-degradability under anoxic conditions (Painter and Mosey 1992; Denger et al. 1996), a point accentuated by the finding of LAS in the sediment of the Mississippi (Tabor and Barber II 1996) and the Rhine (Schöberl and Spilker 1996). However, evidence for the existence of anaerobic bacteria able to cleave the C-SO3 − bond in chemically nonreactive organosulphonates has been published recently (Chien et al. 1995; Denger et al. 1996; Denger and Cook 1997). It has now been shown that the C-SO3 − bond of LAS is subject to cleavage under anoxic conditions and that for the first time, anoxic desulphonation of arylsulphonates is found in Gram-negative bacteria.

Parvibaculum lavamentivorans converts linear alkylbenzenesulphonate surfactant to sulphophenylcarboxylates, α,β-unsaturated sulphophenylcarboxylates and sulphophenyldicarboxylates, which are degraded in communities

Aims: The aims were to test whether Parvibaculum lavamentivorans degraded commercial linear alkylbenzenesulphonate (LAS) surfactant via x-oxygenation and b-oxidation to sulphophenylcarboxylates (SPCs), whether the organism was widespread and reisolable, and whether the degradative community used the 4-sulphocatechol 1,2-dioxygenase to cleave the aromatic ring from LAS. Methods and Results: Hete...

UV-Vis Absorption and Luminescence Spectrum of LAS: Tb3+/Gd3 as a Laser Material (TECHNICAL NOTE)

This article discusses details study on crystallization , optical properties of Li-Al-Si-La glass containing nanocrystalline LaF3.and their optical energy gaps. The Urbach energy of glass samples was evaluated. By using (2% mole) Tb the green–blue range emission occurred, while by accumulation 1% mole Gd beside Tb, the indigo emission intensity (418 to 441 nm) increased.

Influence of Co-substrates in the Anaerobic Degradation of an Anionic Surfactant

The removal of linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) was evaluated in a UASB reactor using shortchain alcohols (ethanol and methanol) and complex co-substrate (yeast extract). Using only methanol and ethanol as co-substrates resulted in removal of LAS between 30 and 41%. At the end, addition of a complex substrate (yeast extract) increased the removal of LAS to 50%. During the assay, water supply...

Ecological and health risk assessment of linear alkylbenzene sulfonates in Doroodzan Dam (Fars)

Background and Objective: Nowadays linear alkyl benzene sulfanate (LAS) is widely used in the production of various detergents. The purpose of this study was to assess the health and ecological hazards of this pollutant on target organisms such as fish and daphnia in the Doroodzan Dam water. Materials and Methods: According to the research objective and given existing restrictions, 21 water sa...

Biodegradation of linear alkylbenzene sulfonate by a two-member facultative anaerobic bacterial consortium

A bacterial consortium capable of degrading the linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) was isolated from the wastewater treatment plant. The bacterial consortium consisted of two members, Pantoea agglomerans and Serratia odorifera 2. Cells were grown evenly together in a minimal medium (M9) and nutrient broth (NB). The bacterial consortium was able to grow in the minimal medium containing LAS as t...
